Mission Statement

For the school year 2009-2010, Woodland Academy offers an affordable pre-kindergarten through  fifth grade multi grade educational program to a diverse student body in a traditional, non-denominational setting.  ("Multi-grade" system means that PreK through 1st grade are taught in  combined classes  with one teacher and 2nd through 5th are also combined with one teacher.  A teacher's aid rotates through each group.) The curriculum allows for individual academic growth while preparing students to continue their education in private or public high schools throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Open School Policy

Woodland Academy admits all students without regard to race, color, religion, nationality, or ethnic origin who meet the entrance standards.  It does not discriminate in the administration of its educational and admission policies, grants, and other school administrative programs.  Candidates for admission are asked to provide not only personal references, but also certificates of good health. Test results and other related information, such as school records, will be reviewed before admission.  Students entering Woodland Academy will be tested for placement.

Class Size

It is the policy of Woodland Academy that all classes are held to a maximum of fifteen.  The Woodland Board of Directors will address any exception to this class size on an individual basis. The Board also makes decisions as to whether or not to add additional grades as necessary.

Administrative Structure

Woodland Academy operates under the direction of a Board of Directors.

The daily supervision of academic program policies and procedures is the responsibility Director of Education.  The implementation and/or maintenance of fiscal records and procedures is the responsibility of the Financial Administrator.  The Senior staff support the Director in handling academic procedures at the Group I level  (Pr-K, K and 1st.) and Group II level (2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th).

History

Quality education for children is the central goal in all good communities. The Woodland Academy family started with that idea as their standard in 1969 when a group of concerned citizens began a school at Neenah on the Hutt family farm called "Woodland".  Grades kindergarten through 4th were taught that year with administrative guidance provided by Chesapeake Academy of Irvington, Virginia.  On August 28, 1970, the small school of Neenah became the independent school we know now as Woodland Academy.

During the summer of 1971 founders of Woodland began planning and building a permanent facility on seven acres not far from the "Woodland" farm site.  The main building consisted of eight classrooms, a library, an administrative office, and a large general activity room.

Another milestone for Woodland took place in November of 1976 when the Board of Directors approved a motion to build a gymnasium.  Fund raising began and resulted in a structure that contains a basketball court, shower rooms, bathrooms, a kitchen and multi-purpose area.  Now sports programs took on an added competitive dimension:  the era of the "Woodland Wolves" basketball team began.

In January 1981, a large group activity room was created in the main building to provide suitable space for both a pre-K and nursery school program.   This program immediately began to thrive and continues to grow today.

Student and family traditions were established with the early spring festival of May Day.  During this celebration the entire student body participates in song and dance to entertain the May Day Court.  Another tradition was established in 1980 when the first Spring Bidding Jubilee was held.  The evening begins with a relaxing social hour and silent auction, followed by a sumptuous prime rib dinner and rousing live auction.  These traditions and many others continue today.
